The EURO Card Systems GmbH (abbreviation EKS) is a joint venture between German banks and savings banks. In cooperation with the German banking industry, EURO Kartensysteme GmbH takes on various tasks in the area of ​​card-based payment transactions. As a communications service provider for the German credit industry , EURO Kartensysteme GmbH is responsible in particular for generic marketing and PR for girocard. This includes information about the functions and possible uses of the girocard, such as B. contactless payment. The company also focuses on three other business areas: business development girocard, security management for payment cards and license management.

The girocard system is the debit system of German banks and savings banks and with around 100 million cards it is the most widely used electronic payment system in Germany.

history

The origins of EURO Kartensysteme GmbH lie in the Society for Payment Systems (GZS mbH) founded in 1982. This came about through the merger of Eurocard Germany and the German Eurocheque headquarters. In the mid-1990s the company had around 1,400 employees. In 1997 the various business areas of GZS were separated. The “trunk” of the GZS became EURO Kartensysteme, EUROCARD and eurocheque GmbH. The split-off processing area continued to use the name GZS.

In 2003, as part of the merger of Europay International and Mastercard International, the EUROCARD brand was given up and the entire acquiring area was separated from the core business. This was bundled in Concardis GmbH, which was created at the time .

In the same year the company name was changed to EURO Kartensysteme GmbH. At the same time, the areas of responsibility of the joint venture were restructured into marketing, license management and security management. In 2016, these were supplemented by the Business Development girocard division.

EURO card systems today

EURO Kartensysteme GmbH is based in Frankfurt am Main. It takes on tasks in the common interest of the German banking industry in the area of ​​card-based payment transactions. The company sees itself as a network and interest group with the aim of promoting cashless payments more strongly. To this end, she advises banking associations, institutes, card organizations and partners in the card business on credit and debit cards , in particular the girocard system. To this end, EKS u. a. with the market research institute infas quo.

In addition, EKS is a sponsor of the German Payment Systems Initiative. V., which as an association represents the interests of its members in the field of electronic payment solutions and provides its board of directors with Ingo Limburg.

EKS is also a member of the EHI Retail Institute GmbH and works closely with the German trade association HDE, e. B. in the education about contactless payment in retail.

As a member of the Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft, EKS also organizes its annual information event, which is all about the topic of payment transactions.

Business areas

EKS concentrates on four different business areas.

The marketing division primarily deals with marketing and PR for the girocard. The girocard brand is the superordinate and neutral framework for all payment options and functions relating to the debit card system of the German credit industry. The area of ​​responsibility of the EURO card systems includes in particular the communication of new functions such as contactless payment for customers and dealers. The department also supports the work of the German credit industry at the girocard city innovation location in Kassel.

The core of the Business Development girocard division lies in the definition of a competitive, target-oriented and at the same time sustainable positioning of the girocard in the market. Above all, the influencing factors “technological development”, “regulations”, “global competitors” and “customer needs” are considered. The area supported the introduction of the contactless girocard and the digital girocard in smartphones, for example.

In the area of security management for payment cards , EURO Kartensysteme works to effectively combat and prevent card misuse through the transfer of knowledge, exchange of experience, cooperation and networking. The division's activities include activities both in specialist groups (e.g. specialist conferences and working groups) and educating the public (e.g. as a co-initiator for the emergency number 116 116 and the central information portal kartensicherheit.de). With EKS-Net, EURO Kartensysteme also operates an online system for recording, processing, managing, evaluating and preventing debit card damage for over 1,500 banks and savings banks. EKS also publishes current debit claims figures every year.

In addition, EURO Kartensysteme is a Principal Member of Mastercard International and is therefore entitled to issue Mastercard licenses to banks, savings banks and other institutions via the license management area . With the help of these sub-licenses, the institutes can issue Mastercard credit cards to their customers or, as so-called “acquiring banks”, settle card payments for merchants.
