Earl Loreburn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earl Loreburn , of Dumfries in the County of Dumfries , was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The title was created on July 4, 1911 by King George V for Lord Chancellor Robert Reid, 1st Baron Loreburn . As early as January 8, 1906, he had been awarded the subordinate title Baron Loreburn , of Dumfries in the County of Dumfries, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The name of the title is derived from the historic motto in the coat of arms of Borough Dumfries, "A Lore Burne". In particular, the Earl was a member of the House of Commons for this constituency from 1889 to 1905. Since the earl's two marriages remained childless, both titles expired on his death on November 30, 1923.
