Robert Kerr, 1st Earl of Ancram

Earl of Ancram is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award

The title was created on June 24, 1633 for Robert Kerr of Ancram and Woodhead . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Kerr of Nisbet, Langnewtoun, and Dolphinstoun .

At the childless death of his son, the 2nd Earl, the titles fell to his nephew Robert Kerr, 1st Earl of Lothian . Already in 1675 he inherited the titles Earl of Lothian and Lord Kerr of Newbottle from his father . In addition, he was on June 23, 1701 Marquess of Lothian , Earl of Ancram , Viscount of Briene and Lord Kerr of Newbottle, Oxnam, Jedburgh, Dolphinstoun and Nisbet . The renewed mention of the title Earl of Ancram is partly understood as a new award of the Earldom and the Marquess is counted as 3rd and 1st Earl of Ancram. The Earldom Ancram has since been a subordinate title of the respective Marquess of Lothian.

The current title holder is Michael Kerr as the 13th Marquess and 15th (and 13th) Earl of Ancram.
