Earl of Lothian
Earl of Lothian is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Scotland .
Awards
The title was first awarded on July 10, 1606 to Mark Kerr, 1st Lord Newbottle . This had already been raised to Lord Newbottle on October 15, 1591 . The titles expired on the death of his son, the 2nd Earl, on March 6, 1624.
Six years later, on October 31, 1631, the title was recreated for the Hon. William Kerr , along with the subordinate title, Lord Kerr of Newbottle . He was married to a daughter of the last Earl of the first order, was his nephew 6th degree and was a son of Robert Kerr, 1st Earl of Ancram . His son, the 2nd Earl, inherited the titles Earl of Ancram and Lord Kerr of Nisbet, Langnewtoun, and Dolphinstoun , created in 1633 from his uncle Charles Kerr, 2nd Earl of Ancram . In addition, he was on June 23, 1701 Marquess of Lothian , Viscount of Briene and Lord Kerr of Newbottle, Oxnam, Jedburgh, Dolphinstoun and Nisbet , raised. The Earldom Lothian has since been a subordinate title of the respective Marquess of Lothian. The current title holder is Michael Kerr as the 13th Marquess and 14th Earl of Lothian.
