Baron Arlington

Baron Arlington , of Arlington in the County of Middlesex , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Awarding and other titles

The title was bestowed on March 14, 1665 by Letters patent from King Charles II to his henchman Sir Henry Bennet . On April 22, 1672, he was also, also in the Peerage of England, the titles Earl of Arlington and Viscount Thetford , in the County of Norfolk , and again raised to Baron Arlington . Since Henry Bennet had no male heirs, all of the titles mentioned were given to him with the special addition that they can be inherited in the female line in the same way as with Baronies by writ , in the absence of male descendants.

According to the special note, the titles fell to his only daughter Isabelle as 2nd Countess when he died in 1685. She was married to Henry FitzRoy , an illegitimate son of King Charles II, who had been made Duke of Grafton in 1675 . So her son and heir Charles united the parental titles in 1723, whereby the Earldom Arlington, the Viscountcy Thetford and the Baronies Arlington were henceforth subordinate titles of the respective Duke of Grafton. The titles remained united until 1936 the 9th Duke died childless. The titles then fell in Abeyance between his sisters, with the exception of Dukedoms Grafton, which fell a distant male relative.

In May 1999, his granddaughter, Jennifer Forwood , achieved that the Abeyance of the Arlington Barony of 1665 was ended in their favor. In return, their relatives who were entitled to do so had waived this title in their favor. The abeyance of the titles from 1672 continues to this day. In addition to Jennifer Forwood, legitimate co-heirs of this title are her nephew Sir Frederick Sebastian Cholmeley, 7th Baronet (* 1968) and her cousin Linda Williams (* 1947).
