Jennifer Jane Forwood, 11th Baroness Arlington , née Nelson (born May 7, 1939 in London ) is a British peeress and politician .

life and career

Forwood was born on May 7, 1939, the daughter of Major General Sir Eustace John Blois Nelson (1912-1993) and Lady Margaret Jane Fitzroy (1916-1995), sister of John FitzRoy, 9th Duke of Grafton (1914-1936). She attended Downham School . Forwood was a housewife.

She is a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association .

She names bridge , gardening and horse racing as hobbies .

Membership in the House of Lords

In May 1999 she inherited the title that had been abeyant since 1936 after the death of the last title holder, the 10th Duke of Grafton (1914-1936), and whose restitution she had applied for in 1997 when the title was suspended . This preempted possible claims from sister and aunt. She had claimed the title since the eldest sister's death. The application for the termination of dormant title status is a special feature of English law. Usually a title is passed on to the male firstborn according to the principle of patriarchal primogeniture. If there is none, the title expires. In some Scottish and old English baronies there is also the possibility of female succession, but not the primogeniture, as it does not apply in this case. As a result, if there are several female and equal descendants, the title is suspended because it cannot be divided. Only when only an authorized female person can claim the title, as here, does it come back to life and is awarded by the Crown upon request.

She took her seat in the House of Lords on May 27, 1999 for the first time. She made her inaugural address on October 18, 1999 on the subject of speeding, including the accidental death of her uncle.

She sat in the upper house as a crossbencher . Even before her inaugural address, she indicated that she wanted to address the issue of drug addiction , as one of her sons had a history of drug problems. She also criticized the impending expulsion of most hereditary peers .

Their membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 on November 11, 1999. For one of the remaining seats they ran for election and finished 58th place. However, only 28 were awarded to the Crossbencher, so they were eliminated.

It is not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election.

She married Captain Rodney Simon Dudley Forwood, son of Sir Dudley Forwood, 3rd Baronet , on December 8, 1965 . They have two sons:
