Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton KG , born Henry Palmer , (born September 20, 1663 in London , † October 7, 1690 in Cork ) was an English nobleman.

Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton

Henry Palmer was the son of King Charles II and his mistress Barbara Palmer , née Villiers, who later became the Duchess of Cleveland. He was recognized by his father in 1672, named Henry FitzRoy and made the Earl of Euston in 1675 Duke of Grafton .

In 1672 he married Lady Isabella Bennet , the only daughter and title heir of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington . The couple had one son, Charles FitzRoy, 2nd Duke of Grafton .

Joined the Royal Navy , he was appointed Vice Admiral of England in 1683 . After Jacob II's accession to the throne in 1685, in which he acted as Lord High Constable , FitzRoy behaved loyally to the new king despite the favoring of Catholics in the army and navy by James II, with which FitzRoy did not agree. He commanded its troops in south west England during the rebellion of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth .

However, when James II abolished the post of Vice-Admiral in 1688 and installed George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth , in command of the fleet that was to defend England against the expected invasion by William of Orange , FitzRoy ran with John on November 24, 1688 Churchill, the later Duke of Marlborough over to Wilhelm. In 1690 he took part in the Marlborough expedition to Ireland and fell in the storm on Cork on October 7, 1690.
