Awards
The title was first bestowed on July 23, 1679 in the Peerage of England to Charles Gerard, 1st Baron Gerard . Along with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Viscount Brandon , of Brandon in the County of Suffolk . As early as November 8, 1645, he had been awarded the title Baron Gerard , of Brandon in the County of Suffolk, also in the Peerage of England . The titles expired on the death of his younger son, the 3rd Earl, on December 26, 1702.
In the second award on November 15, 1721 in the Peerage of Great Britain, the title Earl of Macclesfield , in the County Palatine of Chester , was created for Thomas Parker, 1st Baron Parker . Together with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Viscount Parker , of Ewelm in the County of Oxford . Already on March 10, 1716, he had been awarded the title Baron Parker , of Macclesfield in the County Palatine of Chester, also in the Peerage of England . In contrast to the Barony, the Earldom and the Viscountcy were awarded with the special note that, in the absence of male descendants, they could also be inherited by his daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Sir William Heathcote, 1st Baronet of Hursley Park, and their male descendants. Since he has offspring in the male line to this day, this genetic code has not yet been applied. The current title holder is his great-great-great-great-great-grandson, the 9th Earl.
The seat of the Earl's Second Award was Shirburn Castle in Shirburn in Oxfordshire .
