Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer
Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .
Award
The title was bestowed on May 23, 1711, to Lord High Treasurer Robert Harley , along with the subordinate title Baron Harley , of Wigmore in the County of Hereford . The titles were awarded with the special note that in the absence of direct male descendants they could also be inherited by the male biological descendants of his grandfather Sir Robert Harley.
The titles expired when the 6th Earl died on January 19, 1853.
