John Jervis, 1st Earl of St. Vincent

Earl of St. Vincent was a British hereditary title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

The title was created on May 27, 1797 for Sir John Jervis , the famous British admiral and winner of the naval battle of Cape St. Vincent (1797). The naming of the title refers to this victory. Along with the Earldom, he was given the subordinate title of Baron Jervis , of Meaford in the County of Stafford .

On April 21, 1801 he was additionally awarded the title Viscount St. Vincent , of Meaford in the County of Stafford, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . Since the Admiral's marriage to Martha Parker, which was concluded in 1788, was childless, this award was made with the special addition that the Viscountcy could also be inherited by the male descendants of his sister Mary Ricketts in the absence of male descendants.

Accordingly, the Earldom and the barony expired when the Earl died in 1823, while the Viscountcy passed to his nephew Edward Ricketts as the 2nd Viscount, who then changed his family name to Jervis .
