Awards
The title was created on June 14, 1633 for William Alexander, 1st Viscount of Stirling . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount of Canada and Lord Alexander of Tullibody . On July 12, 1625 he had already been awarded the title of Baronet , of Menstrie in the County of Clackmannan , and on September 4, 1630 the titles of Viscount of Stirling and Lord Alexander of Tullibody . All of these titles belonged to the Peerage of Scotland or Baronetage of Nova Scotia. The title has been suspended since the death of the 5th Earl on December 4, 1739. Since then, no descendants of the Earls have succeeded in effectively substantiating their claim to the title.
