East Rennell is a region of the west Pacific island of Rennell . It is the southeastern third of the island belonging to the island state of Solomon Islands .
In 1998, the region with an area of 37,000 hectares and a three-mile-wide zone in the surrounding sea was added to the list of World Natural Heritage by UNESCO . There it bears the serial number 854.
Since 2013, East Rennell has been on the Red List of Endangered World Heritage Sites due to the rise in sea levels due to climate change, as well as mining, commercial fishing, the clearing of island forests and the sinking of the water table combined with the ingress of seawater .
