archeology

On the northeast slope of the Ebal near el-Burnaṭ there is a walled settlement from the Iron Age I in a strategically favorable location. Two layers of settlement were uncovered within the walls.

  • Older phase (1240–1200 BC): a sanctuary or a sacrificial site and a four-room house as an apartment for the priests;
  • Younger phase (1200–1140 BC): a larger structure (possibly an oversized altar) with two courtyards.

Bible

In the Old Testament, the mountains Ebal and Garizim form a pair. Here the Israelites should be given a curse and a blessing:

"When the LORD your God brings you into the land in which you are to come to take it, you shall have the blessing spoken on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal." ( Deuteronomy 11, 29, Luther Bible 2017)
