Preparatory work

The Eberswalder Carnival Days take place annually in January / February and are closely linked to the Forest Academy . The three Eberswalde research institutes (forest sciences, soil science and plant protection) were always the organizers . They could only take responsibility until the fall of the Berlin Wall .

In contrast to other cities, there are two versions of the event. The Eberswalder Forstfasching e. V. designs the rooms of the shed with elaborate backdrops and has three events annually with around 2000 visitors without hand-made speeches, Elferrat and Funkengarde - the members of the association design a stage and hall program themselves. The Eberswalder Karneval Klub e. V. organizes a carnival as it is common in the Rhineland. The Eberswalder Carnival Days are the highlight of the city's cultural life. In 2017 it took place for the 50th time.

2005 season: Cinema - a dream comes true

The Eberswalder Forstfasching e. V. maintains the Eberswalder carnival traditions:

Invasion of the club and stage show
Disguise and masking according to a motto

The first demonstrable carnival parades took place in 1898. These were even carried out during the Nazi era.

After 1945, the people of Eberswalde went to the masquerade ball in the Volkshaus and to internal carnival events in the House of Unity on Weidendamm.

In the year of the 700th anniversary in 1954, the students moved from the forest institute to crane construction in a horse and cart from the Eberswalder brewery.

In winter 'green balls' took place in the Volkshaus, for the 125th anniversary of the University of Applied Sciences even in the Volkshaus and in the House of Unity, which was located on the grounds of what is now the Weidendamm Park. However, these events were not really carnival, during this time they celebrated much more often than today. The green balls were events of the students in Eberswalde, not official events.

As early as 1956/57, the forest students and the brewery moved together. In the following years, calm returned - too many drunk citizens, lost work, etc. did not fit into the image of socialism.

In 1966 Dr. Gillwald organized a carnival party in the rooms of the forestry university. This resulted in a carnival commission that prepared all the festivities in the following years. The first carnival in 1967 was still a company party, but in the 1970s the celebrations were extended to three weeks, as is still common today. 11.11. the carnival motto of the current season is announced, this also applies to the events of the other clubs. The forest carnival does not stick to the Rhenish traditions, where the carnival is over on Ash Wednesday. The last two events of the 2005 season took place after Shrove Monday.

Between 1988 and 1990 the forest carnival had to move its events to the “Las Vegas” - House of Culture - due to construction work. In 1995 they even moved into the dining room of the repair shop of Deutsche Bahn AG Eberswalde (RAW) because of construction work .

For the Eberswalder Forstfasching eV, which has been founded in the second generation since 1990, these moves always involved a huge amount of effort. The stage and hall decorations are tailored to the shed.

The life of the club is characterized by the preparatory work for the carnival events, which drag on throughout the year. Since the 'Schuppen' venue is being completely decorated, the backdrop painters get together in autumn and create a different theme every year. Custom-made wooden frames, which are covered with canvas, are painted with pictures, comics and the annually changing mascots. In autumn and winter more than 1000 m² backdrops are painted. Many visitors come early to take a quiet look at the furnishings in the halls.

In 1986 some active people separated from the carnival.

The Eberswalder Karnevalklub e. V. (EKK) emerged from the efforts of state cultural organizations to create an umbrella organization for the many different carnival events. At times up to 20 different carnival events of the Eberswalder associations, organizations and businesses took place in the shed:

This state unregulated situation should be better controlled under the umbrella of the EKK. For this reason, representatives of all the clubs mentioned were represented in the EKK's Elferrat in the first few years.

The EKK cultivates the Rhenish customs with hand-made speeches, Elferrat and guard dance at its events. However, the usual election of a prince couple does not take place elsewhere.
