The Volkswagen EcoBlue 2.0 is a combined heat and power unit that is developed and manufactured by Volkswagen .

history

Badger Pro 20 ST
Fp20 cogeneration unit

Volkswagen was already producing industrial engines in the 1950s and further developing them in the following decades with regard to efficiency and environmental compatibility. These industrial engines are manufactured in the Salzgitter engine plant. The small EcoBlue 2.0 power station is also manufactured here.

In 2009 a cooperation was established with the energy company LichtBlick . The energy supplier took care of the sale and operation of the Eco Blue 2.0 with the product name “ Home Power Plant ”. However, since the goal of selling 100,000 power plants in a few years was not achieved, the cooperation was ended in June 2014. By then, LichtBlick had sold around 1,500 devices. Since then, the distribution of the VW EcoBlue 2.0 has been taken over by the small power plant manufacturer SenerTec under the product name Dachs Pro 20 ST . The VW EcoBlue 2.0 has also been marketed by frako power systems , a provider of efficient energy in industry and commerce, under the name fp20 cogeneration unit since 2013 .

functionality

The small power plant EcoBlue 2.0 works on the basis of combined heat and power , in which a conventional 2.0-liter gas combustion engine is coupled with an electricity generator. The engine (designation "VW CNBG 2.0") was developed from a conventional car engine such as that found in the Caddy and Touran models.

These block-type thermal power stations (CHP) are made available to homeowners and companies (mostly in the basement due to their bulky dimensions). For apartment owners, CHPs are not worthwhile due to the high energy output, for apartment owner communities, if the CHP also provides hot water for all apartments in the building in addition to heating, the system is very profitable. If the user now switches on the power plant, it produces electricity by burning natural gas. If required, this is fed into the house's energy network. Excess electricity then flows into the public power grid. The waste heat generated during the combustion process is in turn used for heating and hot water preparation. The heat produced is stored in heat storage tanks of various sizes (600, 800, 1000 liters).

advantages

The idea of CHP is the decentralized and weather-independent energy supply. If there is little wind or sun to generate electricity with wind power or photovoltaic systems, or if peak loads occur in the energy demand, the energy supplier can switch on the heating plants in single and multi-family houses as well as in companies or public buildings and thus cover the vacant electricity demand. This decentralized solution avoids the problem that electricity is difficult to store.

In addition, the EcoBlue 2.0 causes 60 percent less CO 2 than conventional energy and heat generation.
