The Edelfrankolin ( Francolinus nobilis , Syn .: Pternistis nobilis ) is a species of the genus of the Frankoline ( Francolinus ) from the pheasant-like family (Phasianidae). So far, almost nothing is known about him.

Appearance

The Edelfrankolin is up to 35 cm long. Edelfrankoline have dark reddish-brown plumage , a gray head, a red neck and red legs. The eyes are brown, the skin around the eye sockets is bare and red, underneath the plumage is reddish gray. Males and females look very similar, with the male being slightly larger. Males reach a weight of 860 to 895 g, females weigh 600 to 670 g. The young look like their parents, but their plumage is darker overall.

distribution

The Edelfrankolin is native to the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , the southwest of Uganda and the border region between Burundi and Rwanda . It lives in mountain forests with dense undergrowth in mountain forests, especially in bamboo forests , up to the alpine region at altitudes of up to 3700 meters.

Way of life

It is extremely shy and difficult to observe due to its habitat. The birds mainly flee on foot and only fly short distances when they are under severe pressure. Its food, which it seeks mainly in the early morning and late afternoon, consists mainly of seeds . In the Kivu region, they breed from April to September. Further information is not known.
