Edelhard Harlis

Edelhard "Eddie" Heinrich Otto Harlis (born July 12, 1928 in Osnabrück , † July 3, 1985 in Düsseldorf ) was a German furniture designer and interior designer. Harlis is known for his design of the S 664 chair for Thonet in 1954, which is now a design classic.

Life

Edelhard Heinrich Otto Harlis, called Eddie Harlis, was born on July 12, 1928 in Osnabrück. Even at school, Harlis dealt intensively with questions of form and construction. After the Second World War, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then studied at what was then the art school in Hildesheim.

From 1953 he worked as a freelance interior architect and designer.

In the fifties he lived and worked at times with other artists, including Günther Uecker , Hannes Esser and Bernd and Hilla Becher , in the Einbrunger Mühle artists' colony in Düsseldorf. He was immortalized in 1957/58 together with Günter Grass and 53 other artists and Düsseldorf personalities on the "Tin Drum Picture" by the painters Franz Witte and Germán Becerra . From 1972 to 1980 he lived in Mallorca.

On December 22nd, 1961, he married the Berlin-based set designer and interior designer Barbara Armknecht. The marriage resulted in a son, Philippe Harlis. Philippe Harlis lives and works as an architect in Palma de Mallorca.

Eddie Harlis died on July 3, 1985 in Düsseldorf of complications from a stomach ulcer.

Eddie Harlis, who had just finished his exams at the Hildesheim Art School, joined Thonet in the 1950s. His chair S 652 for the new building of the Kurhaus Wildungen was the first major design for Thonet in the post-war period.

In 1954 he designed the shell chair S 664, which is now a design classic. Other designs for Thonet include the S 667 chair, the ST 683 armchair and the ST 805 armchair .

He designed the California sofa for the Bielefeld company Kaufeld , which made its debut at the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels.

Eddie Harlis also worked for COR , Profilia and WK . As an interior designer, he designed bars, restaurants, cafés and shop fittings.
