The Edelweißboden is a plateau on the Trenchtling , a mountain in the Hochschwab massif in Styria. Due to the many rare alpine flowering plants that grow here, the Trenchtling is a botanical specialty, which also earned it the title “mountain of flowers”. The highest elevation above the Trenchtling, the high tower (2081 m), and the Edelweißboden (approx. 1800 m) are popular destinations for hikers and mountaineers. The plateau known today as “Edelweißboden” can still be found on older maps with the name “Zirbenboden”.

The edelweiss soil is known for the eponymous rare alpine edelweiss, which blooms here in large numbers over a rarely large area in early summer. But other alpine flower species such as various types of cabbage florets, head-shaped lice herb, velvet, gentian and Clusius primroses grow here and make the edelweiss soil and the Trenchtling a natural area worth seeing. In addition to the flora, chamois and ibex can also be encountered and observed here, and marmots in the direction of the high tower.

natural reserve

Many of the rare plant species, especially edelweiss , are endangered by increasing tourism. Individual flowers are often torn up, but also entire edelweiss sticks are dug up in order to take them home. However, collecting and picking edelweiss is prohibited. This has been under nature protection in Austria since 1886.

The Edelweißboden is located within a nature reserve Almböden in the area of the Trenchtling and many signs point to the protection of the rare mountain plants.

Regular checks by the Alpine Club help to prevent this natural gem from being destroyed.
