Edgar O. (Ed) Schmued (Schmüd) (born December 30, 1899 in Hornbach , † June 1, 1985 in Oceanside (California) ) was a German-American aircraft designer, famous for the design of the North American P-51 Mustang and fighter aircraft North American F-86 Saber for North American Aviation .

Life

Edgar Schmued was born in Hornbach on December 30, 1899 . He went to Brazil in 1925 and worked for General Aviation, the aviation arm of General Motors Corporation in Brazil. In 1931, because of his excellent work, he received an immigration permit to the United States, where he then worked for the Fokker Aircraft Corporation of America in New Jersey, an aircraft manufacturer owned by General Motors. There he began his career as an aircraft designer. Schmued designed numerous aircraft. By far its most famous design was the successful P-51 Mustang aircraft that was used in World War II . Schmued died on June 1, 1985 in Oceanside, California .
