Edith Dircksey Cowan Memorial
The Edith Dircksey Cowan Memorial (formerly called the Edith Cowan Clock Memorial ) is located at the entrance to Kings Park in Perth , Western Australia .
This memorial commemorates Edith Cowan (1861-1932), who was the first woman in Australia to be elected to parliament in 1921.
Edith Cowan was a social reformer , child and women's rights activist . Although she was only a member of parliament for one term and was not re-elected, she was able to achieve a lot for social rights for women and children and thereby became a person who became well known in Australia.
The monument is made of a regional limestone and is about 6 meters high. It is built in the Art Deco style as a clock tower , shows a bronze plaque with the portrait of Edith Cowan, another plaque with text and a clock on each side of the tower. It is the first monument erected in Australia to a civil society female figure.
The memorial was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor James Mitchell on June 9, 1934, marking the second anniversary of the death of Edith Cowan.
