Edmund Robertson
Edmund Frederick Robertson (born June 1, 1943 in St. Andrews , Scotland ) is a Scottish mathematician and mathematician.
Life
Robertson studied at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Warwick , where he received his master's degree in 1966 and his doctorate in 1968 with Stewart Stonehewer (Classes of Generalized Nilpotent Groups). He was then a lecturer in pure mathematics at the University of St. Andrews, from 1984 senior lecturer and from 1995 professor. From 1988 to 1991 he was chairman of the mathematics faculty and 2000/01 chairman of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at St. Andrews.
As a mathematician, he deals with algebra and especially group theory and computer algebra methods in group theory. He is known together with John J. O'Connor (* 1945), who also teaches mathematics in St. Andrews, as the founder and operator of the MacTutor Mathematics Archive (“ MacTutor History of Mathematics archive ”), a very extensive collection of online Biographies of mathematicians (with photos and references) and materials on the history of mathematics. For this he received the European Academic Software Award and several other prizes with O'Connor in 1994. The archive on the history of mathematics is only part of a larger range of mathematics-pedagogical software from the two authors.
He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh since 1997 and, together with O'Connor, was awarded the Hirst Prize by the London Mathematical Society in 2015 for his work on the MacTutor Mathematics Archive.
