Edmund Hirst

Sir Edmund Langley Hirst (born July 21, 1898 in Preston , Lancashire, † October 29, 1975 in Edinburgh ) was a British chemist .

He studied chemistry and received his doctorate in 1921 under Walter Norman Haworth at the University of St Andrews

Hirst held the Forbes Chair of Organic Chemistry at Edinburgh University . From 1959 to 1964 he was President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

In 1934 he synthesized together with Norman Haworth first time the vitamin C .

In 1957 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as Commander . In 1964 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir").

He was married twice and had no children.
