Eduard Theling

Eduard Ætheling or Edward the Exile (* 1016 ; † February 1057 ) was the son of the English king Edmund Ironside and Ealdgyth. He was nicknamed "Exile" because he spent most of his life outside of England. He was nicknamed "Ætheling" as the son of a king.

He was only a few months old when he was brought to Denmark by Canute the Great to be murdered there. However, he was secretly brought to Kiev , from where he came to Hungary .

When Eduard the Confessor , Knut's stepson and Edmund Ironsides half-brother, heard that his nephew Eduard Ætheling was alive, he called him back to England and appointed him as his heir. However, Eduard died a few months later, which triggered a follow-up dispute that eventually led to the Norman conquest of England .

Edward's wife was Agatha , daughter of King Stephen of Hungary and Giselas of Bavaria . Her children were Edgar Ætheling , Margaret of Scotland and Christina, the aunt and tutor of the later English Queen Edith of Scotland .
