Edward Newton

Sir Edward Newton KCMG (November 1832 - April 25, 1897 ) was a British colonial administrator and ornithologist. He was the brother of Alfred Newton . He is not related to the artist and photographer John Edward Newton .

As a colonial administrator, he worked in Mauritius from 1859 to 1877 . From there he sent his brother various specimens of various birds, including the already extinct dodo (dronte) and Rodrigues solitaire .

The Madagascar falcon ( Falco newtoni ) is named after him in its Latin name.
