Edward Tynte came from a family in Somerset raised to the lower nobility (baron) . Nevertheless, the names of his parents have not been passed down. His date and place of birth are also not known. On December 9, 1708 he was appointed the future colonial governor of the Province of Carolina. However, he took up this office on November 26, 1709, almost a year later. He replaced Nathaniel Johnson as governor and only exercised it for seven months until his death on June 26, 1710. During this time he was unable to achieve much in his politically divided colony. The main problems at the time were the ongoing Queen Anne's War and the tensions between the various religious groups. One of the few laws that was passed under Tynte set the course for a future new and free school system.
