Edward Wakefield

Edward Wakefield (* 1845 , † 1924 ) was a New Zealand journalist and politician .

Career

In 1866, at the age of just 21 , Wakefield became the private secretary to New Zealand Prime Minister Edward Stafford and served as the government's cabinet secretary for the next four years. He later turned to the newspaper business and was editor of the Timaru Herald . He also wrote editorials for the Otago Daily Times , New Zealand Times and The Press .

From 1875 to 1881 he was the MP for the Geraldine constituency in the New Zealand Parliament . He then took over the position of Colonial Secretary in the government of Harry Atkinson , which, however, failed after only a week due to a vote of no confidence . In the electoral term from 1884 to 1887 he represented the constituency of the Selwyn District .
