These rodents reach a head body length of around 9 centimeters, plus a 4 to 5 centimeter long tail. The weight is 18 to 25 grams. The fur is brown on the top and whitish on the underside. The nose has a dark, leather-like padding, the ears are small, the tail short. The name-giving feature is the extended claws on the front legs. They have a comb of bristle-like hair on their hind feet.

These animals are only found in southern Argentina , where they are distributed from Río Negro to Santa Cruz . Their habitat are dry, bush-lined steppes. They lead an underground, burrowing way of life and feed mainly on insects, supplemented by seeds.
