Eesti Demobiliseeritud Sõjaväelaste Liit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eesti Demobiliseeritud Sõjaväelaste Liit ( Union of Demobilized Soldiers of Estonia - DSL) was a veterans' organization and small party in Estonia in the 1920s.

background

In 1918 Estonia proclaimed its detachment from the Russian Empire and its state sovereignty. In the following Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920) the young republic was able to successfully defend itself against Soviet Russia . In the Tartu Peace Treaty of February 2, 1920, Soviet Russia recognized the independence of Estonia.

Foundation and program

In January 1921, the "Union of Demobilized Soldiers of Estonia" ( Eesti Demobiliseeritud Sõjaväelaste Liit ) was founded in Tartu in southern Estonia . It saw itself as a general advocacy group for war veterans. The Union was a largely apolitical organization that primarily concerned itself with the economic and political concerns of war veterans, suggested monuments and recorded war memorials. In addition, the patriotic "spirit of the war of freedom" should be passed on to the Estonian youth. At the second congress in 1922, the association already had 44,000 members in 148 regional groups. It had grown into a mass organization.

Political party

In the parliamentary elections in 1923 , the association ran for the only time in elections. The aim was to better assert veterans' interests on the political stage. The election results were disappointing: only 5,670 voters voted for the list. With 1.2 percent of the vote, the association was able to send a representative, the economic expert Heinrich Laretei , to parliament ( Riigikogu ). The veterans' party founding failed. Laretei later joined the smallholder " Settlers Association ".

resolution

After the founding of the home guard association Kaitseliit , the "Union of Demobilized Soldiers of Estonia" dissolved in 1925. Individual regional groups still existed.
