Efik or Calabar is a language spoken by 500,000 people in Nigeria in the Cross River State in Calabar and the surrounding area, including the second speakers , the number of speakers is estimated at 2 to 3 million. The speakers are also called Efik . Efik belongs to the Cross-River branch of the Benue-Congo languages , a large sub-unit of the Niger-Congo . It is considered one of the official Nigerian languages and is used in schools, universities and adult education. Its use as a lingua franca is declining. Efik is written in Latin script (with special characters), there are radio and TV programs.
