The Egelsee is a small lake with 0.83 hectares of water. The Egelsee is located in a shallow, swampy depression that emerged from a late- worm ice-age kettle , in the area of the municipality of Andechs about two kilometers southwest of Frieding in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg .
The Egelsee gained notoriety through a suspected meteorite impact on March 4, 1995, which caused worldwide press reports. In truth, it was a culture explosion on the edge of the Egelsee.
