Eginhard and Emma
Eginhard and Emma are fictional medieval lovers from the time of Charlemagne . Their legend is handed down in the Chronicon laurishamense , the chronicle of the Lorsch monastery . The name variant Eginhard refers to the Frankish scholar Einhard , the author of the Vita Karoli Magni , equated, whose historically attested wife Imma appears as the daughter of Charlemagne.
In a legend that is supposed to explain the name of Einhard's town Seligenstadt, the runaway lovers are found again by the emperor in this town.
The material was processed as opera and drama:
- Emma and Eginhard , opera by Georg Philipp Telemann (1728)
- Eginhard and Emma , drama by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1811)
- Emma and Eginhard , drama by Helmina von Chézy (1817)
- Fierrabras , opera by Franz Schubert (1823)
