Egon Weissenbach

Egon Weißenbach (* 1897 in Bischofteinitz ; † 1966 ) was an Austrian painter and restorer.

life and career

Egon Weißenbach was born in Bischofteinitz in 1897 as the son of the District Court Councilor August Weissenbach. His father was a long-time head of the district court and played a significant role in the city's social and cultural life.

Egon Weißenbach graduated from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . Church painting was his main activity in the long artistic activity. Many Austrian pilgrimage and cathedral churches owe him the new and restoration of their frescoes, for example St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. In 1936 he restored the miraculous image of Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which is in the high altar of Innsbruck Cathedral. He also presented his art at the Vienna Academy. In 1945 Weißenbach took over the management of the workshop for restoration work at the University of Applied Arts Vienna as an assistant. In 1951 he exposed the overpainted frescoes on the Maria Taferl pilgrimage church .
