Former Kinkplatz computer science school
The former IT middle school on Kinkplatz (also called Waidhausenstrasse school ) in the 14th district of Penzing in Vienna is now an empty school building that was built by Helmut Richter from 1992 to 1994 . The building was awarded the Austrian Builder Prize in 1995.
The school was conceived as an architectural showcase project, or in Richter's words: "I wanted to create a school where the unpleasant things that are always noticeable in schools are not immediately noticeable".
The two wedge-shaped glass bodies that are built for the entrance hall and the gymnasium are striking. The steel construction has a span of 18 meters and is supposed to be reminiscent of dragonfly wings with the bluish shimmering glass. These tracts can be clearly seen from a distance, including from the Gloriette . To the north there are three wings away from the glass construction, in which the classrooms and various special areas were housed. These tracts are constructed as a concrete skeleton with prefabricated ceilings, the facade consists of steel elements and aluminum sliding windows. The escape stairs at the end of the wing are also glass-clad, which gives the building additional plasticity. In general, glass is the defining element of architecture - it should guarantee the greatest possible brightness and transparency.
However, the property soon came under fire due to construction defects. One problem in particular was the heat that was generated by the glass roof in summer - this was also due to the fact that a photovoltaic system planned by Richter, which should also have provided shading, was not implemented for cost reasons. The roof of the gym also turned out to be leaky, the water had to be collected in buckets, which was also a nuisance for the sports clubs that shared the gym. The frequent ingress of water also caused rust and mold.
After a temporary alternative quarter was built in the nearby Torricelligasse in 2017, the City of Vienna decided in June 2019 not to continue using the building as a school. The main reason for this decision were the renovation costs estimated at 55 million euros. At the moment, a re-use is being sought; demolishing the building is not an option , not least because of the city’s responsibility for building culture, which was emphasized by Jürgen Czernohorszky .
