The former service building of the Hamburg rulers is on the corner of Klingberg / Depenau. (Addresses: Klingberg 1 and Depenau 1). It is designated as a cultural monument with the object ID 29140. The house is now the police station 14 - Klingberg branch (formerly police station 12). The LKA 43 responsible for robbery is also located here (as of 2016).

Building history

The building was constructed from 1906 to 1908 according to plans by Albert Erbe . The building owner was the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, construction inspector Bauer and master builder Maetzel were in charge of construction. The construction technology was quite advanced for the time: The false ceilings were made of reinforced concrete , and a low-pressure steam heater supplied the rooms with heat. The construction costs were around 300,000 Reichsmarks, 23.74 Reichsmarks per cubic meter of enclosed space.

The house served as the seat of the land rulers , an area administration of the Hamburg rural areas, which was dissolved in 1938. From the beginning it also housed a police station with rooms in the basement, on the ground floor and on the first floor. On the upper floors were the rooms of the landlords, as well as living rooms for the district sergeant and the caretaker. There was a separate entrance and staircase for each room group.

In the course of the construction of the new Hamburg Kontorhausviertel , the house of the landlords was included in the building complex of the Chilehaus in 1924 .

Building description

Sketch of the ground floor with the original use

The building is based on the baroque Hamburg town houses of the 18th century. The brick masonry is structured by protrusions and loosened up by decorative elements and cornices made of stone.

Basic structure

The house has a slightly raised ground floor, above it - set off by a cornice - three upper floors. Above the third floor, another cornice forms a clear step to the top floors.

The floor plan is not right-angled because it adapts to the course of the adjacent streets. So the corner to the Depenau forms a slightly obtuse angle. The eaves side facing Depenau extends over eight window axes with an entrance portal on the far left. The roof is structured on this side by two gables.

If you look at the building from the gable side on the Klingberg, you will notice an uneven vertical division: on the left the dominant five-axis facade under a large tail gable , on the right a narrow transverse building with the entrance portal.

Ornamental shapes

On the eaves side, the entrance portal and the middle windows on the first and second floors are decorated with sandstone.

The gable side is more richly decorated: decorative elements are located on the entrance portal, on the gable and in the central axis of the gable facade below. There the window parapets have sandstone decorations. A medallion with the Hamburg coat of arms can be seen at the transition to the gable. The pediment itself is framed by volutes and sandstone edges and crowned by a vase.

A rich sculptural design adorns the entrance portal on the Klingberg and the window above. The content here is about the importance of the Hamburg rural areas for the city's nutrition. Two children are shown on either side of the window. The girl on the left is carrying a sheaf of grain and crops, the boy on the right is holding a fishing net with fish and crabs. The theme returns in a relief with two female figures just above the door. The left one is surrounded by crops, the right one by symbols of life on the water.

Filming location of the series Großstadtrevier

In episodes 1 to 28 of the ARD series Großstadtrevier , the police station at Klingberg 1 was used for the outdoor shots. The sign with the inscription "Polizeirevier 12" was pasted over accordingly.
