The building

Dillingen, founded in 1804 by Landgrave Friedrich V. von Hessen-Homburg , was settled with colonists from places in Vogelsberg and neighboring communities. The landgrave instructed the residents to visit the church in Köppern . This path was difficult, especially in winter, so the residents wanted their own church. Until then, the landgrave instructed the teacher to hold an hour of edification with prayer and a sermon on Sundays for those who were ill healthily unable to go to church.

In 1820, Friedrich VI. von Hessen-Homburg half of a building built in 1804 as a school and teacher's apartment. In 1858 the community also acquired the western half and converted it into a prayer room. The landgrave ordered the installation of a large church window in the Gothic style. The roof turret also dates from the year of consecration in 1859.

In 1883 the local prison was added to the rear of the building; In 1888 the classroom was converted into a teacher's apartment and an extension with a new classroom.

In front of the building is the shaft of the old village well. The building is popularly referred to as "Dillenburg Cathedral", which is certainly more due to alliteration than to the size of the building.
