Former guard house

The building at Marktstrasse 26 in Mühlheim am Main is generally referred to as the former guard house. It is a listed building and is the landmark of the old town center of Mühlheim.

Architecture and history

The former guardhouse of the night watchman is an example of the now rarely preserved type of guardhouse, which is usually equipped with a column front and detention room - as is also the case in Egelsbach - for the southern Hessian area since the late 18th century.

The guard house, built in late Classicist style in 1861 , used to contain two holding cells and a lounge for the guards. The protruding hipped roof is supported by sandstone pillars with cube capitals and cube bases. These are possibly re-used Romanesque components that were renewed in the course of the renovation.

Until the First World War it served as a base for the community's night watchmen. From 1927 it served as a transformer house and remained in this function until the November pogroms in 1938 . Afterwards it was also used to lock up Jewish residents before they were transported to the Buchenwald concentration camp . In 1975 the building was supposed to be demolished, but this could be prevented by civic engagement.
