Way of life

The very flat caterpillars live as miners in the bark of young oaks , the breast and abdominal legs are transformed into small creeping bulges. The segments also have rough crawling plates on both the stomach and the back. The overwintering takes place as a caterpillar, the pupation in the mine chamber under a silk weave. When the bark dries up, it bursts open and clears the way for the butterfly.

pest

In large numbers, the oak bark miners can cause not inconsiderable damage in oak plantations.
