The Eidenbenzlöwe
The signet on a sign

The Eidenbenzlöwe is the signet of the city of Braunschweig , which is based on the Braunschweig heraldic animal, the Braunschweig lion . It was named after the Swiss graphic artist Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1993), who worked in Braunschweig and designed the original signet from the 1950s. It is now also part of the logo of the city of Braunschweig and the Braunschweig citizens' mark and has been modified several times. The Eidenbenzlowe is now an integral part of everyday life in the city and in the life of Brunswick and often replaces the city's coat of arms . It can be found in the city's correspondence and on all kinds of documents, signs and objects throughout the city.

Hermann Eidenbenz designed the signet in 1954. Geometric lines and front legs arranged at right angles gave it a modern character. From 1953 to 1955, Eidenbenz was head of the department for commercial graphics at the “Werkkunstschule Braunschweig”, today's University of Fine Arts . The Eidenbenzlöwe was reserved for the city of Braunschweig as an official brand. In 1984 Eidenbenz edited the logo himself one last time.

In 2005 a new corporate design was introduced for the city of Braunschweig. This also included a new logo, in which the signet became an important part.

In 2018 the design of the city of Braunschweig was renewed, the city received a new logo and the eidenbenz lion was adapted and made leaner for use by the city. The Eidenbenzlowe was filled in in the logo itself.

Since 2018 there has been a citizen's mark ("lion logo") with a simplified eidenbenz lion. The lion logo is filled in to distinguish it from the official logo. It is available for free and non-commercial use by citizens and commercial use is only permitted in individual cases and after approval.
