Mátyás Szandai

Mátyás Szandai (born July 1, 1977 in Balassagyarmat ) is a Hungarian jazz musician ( double bass , composition ).

Act

Szandai played in various jazz bands since he was 16. He studied classical double bass with Gergely Járdányi at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he graduated in 2004. He also studied classical composition with Jean-Michel Bardez at the Conservatoire Hector Berlioz in Paris and Jazzharmonie with Emil Spányi at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris . He has been studying for a master’s degree at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne since September 2017 .

Szandai has been a member of Mihály Dresch's quartet since 1996 , with whom he recorded four albums for BMC Records , including Hungarian Bebop (with Archie Shepp , 2002). He also belonged to the quartet of Csaba Czirják, the septet of Csaba Tűzkő and the group of Elemér Balázs , with whom he released albums such as Our Worlds Beyond (with Charlie Mariano , 2003). With the violinist Mathias Lévy and the cimbalom player Miklós Lukács , Bartók Impressions (2018) improvised on folk songs collected by Bela Bartók . He also worked with Kristóf Bacsó, Viktor Tóth , Dániel Szabó ( Frictions , 2007 with Kurt Rosenwinkel ), Kálmán Oláh and András Dés, who are also among the leading Hungarian jazz musicians, but also with Kálmán Balogh , David Murray , Herbie Mann , Chico Freeman , Rosario Giuliani , William Parker , Rob Brown , Gerard Presencer , Chris Potter , Flavio Boltro , Zbigniew Namysłowski , Perico Sambeat , Didier Ithursarry and Ichirō Onoe .

Szandai toured in various constellations in America and India and in almost every country in Europe. He is particularly interested in world jazz and the traditions of Balkan folk music, but has also been involved in new music productions, such as Gábor Gadós' album Byzantinum (2008).

Prizes and awards

Two albums in which Szandai was involved were named Jazz Album of the Year in the annual poll of the Hungarian jazz magazine Gramofon : Mihály Dresch Straight Music (2004), Viktor Tóth: Climbing with Mountains (2007).
