The Swiss Federal Chronicle is the youngest of the important Swiss illustrated chronicles of the late Middle Ages . It was compiled between 1510 and 1535 in Bremgarten by the chronicler Werner Schodoler in the tradition of the Swiss illustrated chronicle .

It consists of three volumes of 1470 pages in total with 328 drawings, some of which are colored. Volume 1 was never illustrated despite the space left for it. The writing and typeface of the chronicle show great balance and cohesion. The illustrators can be assigned to the circle of Urs Graf , Hans Leu dJ and Niklaus Manuel .

The three volumes of the chronicle are now in different places. Volume 1 in the Leopold-Sophien-Bibliothek in Überlingen , Volume 2 in the City Archives in Bremgarten and Volume 3 in the Cantonal Library in Aarau .

In terms of content, Schodoler spans the range from the building of the cities of Zurich , Lucerne and Bern , through the founding of the Swiss Confederation, to the numerous armed conflicts with Habsburg, the Burgundy Wars , the Swabian War and, most recently, the Italian campaigns. It is believed that Schodoler was an eyewitness to the battle of Marignano . In addition, numerous local stories are dealt with and illustrated, such as the murder night in Zurich , the Waldmann trade or the Jetzer trade .
