Federal Military Equestrian Institute
The Eidgenössische Militärpferdeanstalt (EMPFA) was a federal organization with the mandate to train horses, so-called remonten , for the cavalry of the Swiss Army .
history
In 1890 the Central Remontendepot (CRD) was created, which was renamed the Federal Military Horse Institute in 1950 . The Swiss Air Force was formed on the adjacent Beundenfeld in 1914 . In 1964 , Henri Chammartin , a rider at the institute, won Olympic gold in dressage . In the 1960s, up to 1,500 horses were kept and up to 600 young horses made fit for duty every year. In 1972 the cavalry was abolished in Switzerland. As a result, a merger of the operation with the national stud in Avenches was discussed in Parliament and the Federal Council .
When it became foreseeable that the EMPFA would cease operations, the National Horse Center was founded as a cooperative in 1995 with the aim of taking over the previous tasks of the EMPFA on a smaller scale.
