Federal popular initiative «for impunity for termination of pregnancy»

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The federal popular initiative “for impunity of the termination of pregnancy” was the first Swiss popular initiative on the subject of abortion. She demanded that the abortion paragraphs be deleted from the penal code without replacement. It was launched in 1971 by a five-person committee (a free-thinking Grand Council, a Social Democratic National Council, a liberal community politician, all three from the canton of Neuchâtel, and two non-party members, a woman and a man, from the canton of Bern). The launch took place without the support of any parties or associations.

The collection of signatures began on June 20, 1971, with the help of the women's liberation movement (FBB). The initiative was submitted on December 1, 1971, and officially confirmed on December 27, 1971. The Federal Council and Parliament rejected the initiative.

The initiative never came to the vote because it was withdrawn by the initiators on February 24, 1976 in favor of the deadline solution initiative .
