One halved and one whole egg ball

The egg ball (plural: egg ball ) is a fried egg that is popular as a snack in the north and east of the Netherlands . Outside of these regions, the Eierbal is hardly known.

The first egg balls were fried in Groningen at the beginning of the 1950s , whose egg ball tradition is part of the intangible cultural heritage of the Netherlands.

description

An egg ball consists of a whole or half a boiled, peeled egg that is coated with a layer of dough. The eggs are chicken eggs, and occasionally quail eggs. The dough consists of flour, bouillon, butter and egg white. The ball is breaded and fried at 180 to 185 ° C. The exact recipe can vary from snack bar to snack bar.

Egg balls are eaten warm or cold, out of hand or as part of a larger meal. They are available in the typical machine restaurants , called Eten uit de muur (Eating out of the Wall), in snack bars and in cafeterias .

variants

In Great Britain there is a similar snack, the Scottish eggs , which in the Netherlands is also called vogelnestje . The egg is coated with sausage meat instead of batter.

Another variant of the egg bale is the Frietei , in which the egg is sometimes cut into pieces before it is rolled into a ball in breadcrumbs. This Frietei can be found in the east and south of the Netherlands.

The largest egg ball in the world was fried by Groningen students on June 24, 2015 at the Friet van Piet snack bar . An ostrich egg was used for this. The circumference of this egg ball was 44 cm .
