Eilís Dillon (born March 7, 1920 in Galway , † July 19, 1994 ) was an Irish writer. She created poems, short stories, books for children and young people as well as novels and crime stories.

Life

Eilís Dillon was a daughter of chemistry professor Thomas Dillon and a niece of the poet Joseph Mary Plunkett . Her mother's name was Geraldine. In 1940 she married. The mother of three ran a student home and wrote poetry, short stories and novels. In total, she created about 50 books, the first of which were written in Irish . Her work has been translated into 14 languages. Her youth book Im Schatten des Vesuv , which takes place at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, is known.

The Eilís Dillon Award is named after Eilís Dillon and is presented annually as part of the Bisto Book of the Year Awards .
