Enclosure Schwamendingen
The Schwamendingen enclosure is a road traffic project in Zurich .
Since 1980, one of the busiest streets with around 110,000 vehicles a day has passed through the middle of a residential area in Zurich- Schwamendingen . As a result, the noise limit values are exceeded day and night, and the air is heavily polluted with exhaust gases from motor vehicles. The impairments caused by the motorway are to be completely or largely eliminated with an enclosure in order to increase the quality of life in the residential area. Accordingly, the project enjoys support from the neighborhood population, associations, organizations and building cooperatives.
The Schwamendingen enclosure envisages completely enclosing the section between the Aubrugg motorway junction and the Schöneichtunnel of the A1 national road over a length of 940 meters with a separate tunnel. The tunnel is being built using the opencast method and with rolling traffic. The building should be completed around 2024.
The Schwamendingen enclosure connects directly to the Schöneich tunnel and extends it out of town to a total of 1.7 kilometers. In the course of the construction work for the enclosure, the Schöneichtunnel will be upgraded in terms of ventilation and safety technology and brought up to date. Among other things, the grid ceiling of the forest garden will be closed and a new ventilation structure with an exhaust chimney will be built at the west portal of the animal hospital.
Specifics of the project
Green and open space for the neighborhood population
The roof of the enclosure, around seven meters high, is accessed via a series of stairs in the form of ramps, stairs and lifts. The roof and a little more than half of the outer walls are planted. The further surface design with paths, lighting and seating creates a new green and open space for the neighborhood population on the roof.
Footpaths will be created on both sides along the enclosure. These are publicly accessible and also passable for non-motorized traffic. The various ramps, stairs and lifts to the new green and open space can be reached from the paths. The paths also guarantee rescue and emergency services rapid access in the event of an incident on the enclosure ceiling and are used to maintain the service lines at the level of the city streets.
New urban development impulses for Schwamendingen
The expected increase in the quality of life and quality of life through the Schwamendingen enclosure also triggered an impetus for the structural development of the adjacent residential area. Landowners and cooperatives respond with studies and new construction plans for their properties. However, the living space should also remain affordable for families.
The city of Zurich is supporting the transformation process. The Office for Urban Development has drawn up an urban development concept for the area. This is based on test planning and feasibility studies. A special use plan will define the structural options in the project perimeter.
