Single lever control

The single-lever control is the usual type of throttle lever on motor and sailing yachts . The drive and direction of the drive are controlled by a single lever. If the helmsman moves the lever forwards, thrust is developed forwards, if he moves it backwards, thrust backwards. If the ship has several engines, there is one lever per engine. The term "throttle" is fundamentally wrong, as most diesel engines do not have a carburetor. This single control ( English Throttle ), only the filling amount changes at the injection pump and thus the speed.

The alternative, the two-lever control , is rare as it is more prone to incorrect operation. Sometimes a single-lever circuit for two motors is also called a two-lever circuit.

The or - in the case of several machines - the "throttle" of a boat are within reach of the helmsman in the cockpit . For motor boats on the helmsman's control console, for sailing boats either on the console of the steering wheel or on the side wall. They are usually arranged in such a way that they can be moved forwards and backwards, which intuitively fits the expected motor command. In a few cases, a single lever is also attached transversely for reasons of space. The levers have a clearly locking center position and can be moved forwards or backwards from this position. If you move a lever forwards from the neutral position, the transmission is engaged in forward gear and then accelerated. The further the lever is moved, the more thrust the engine and propeller develop. If the lever is moved back to the neutral position, the gearbox disengages and the propeller stops. Moving the lever in the other direction will cause the propeller to reverse and slow the boat down or maneuver it backwards.

This simple operation practically rules out incorrect manipulation. Merely switching from forward to reverse drive abruptly can damage the transmission.

With the two-lever control, two levers are used for the direction of rotation (direction of travel) and speed. Here the helmsman himself has to make sure to first reduce the speed before the motor is disengaged.

The sloppy phrase put the lever (s) on the table means “give full throttle”.

Two Bowden cables go from each lever to the respective motor. One line transmits the direction selection to the reversing gear, i.e. selects the direction of rotation of the propeller, the other controls the injection and thus the speed. There is also a device on the lever to accelerate without engaging the clutch, for example to start the cold engine more easily or for test runs. To do this, a button on the lever must be pressed in the neutral position or the lever itself must be pulled out while the lever is moved forwards or backwards.
