Switch-on curve

A switch-on curve graphically describes the behavior over time of an electrical component , an electrically operated device , an electrical circuit or a measuring section after it has been "switched on" or an electrical voltage or current has been applied to the electrical connections.

When switching electrical devices, a constant voltage is normally applied. Electric motors , especially when they start up under load, have high starting currents , which then decrease. For example, the necessary time behavior of the electrical protection can be determined on the basis of the course of the current over time in the switch-on curve .


The term activation curve is often used in the same sense as the audience rating for the audience response of television programs and describes the positive or negative change in the number of viewers in the course of the program after the program has started.
