Railway repair shop in Recklinghausen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The railway repair shop in Recklinghausen was a railway repair shop of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , later the Deutsche Bundesbahn , in the district Hillerheide of Recklinghausen . It was located southwest of the Recklinghausen Ost freight yard. It was founded in 1905 - as part of a nationwide system of repair shops and workshops. One focus was the freight wagons. The factory gate was on Maybachstrasse. 3,000 people worked in the plant for the wedding. At the time of the Second World War, slave labor was also employed here.

The period around 1950 was characterized by short-time work. The last year of training began in 1953. In 1961 the plant was closed. From 1964 the British Army on the Rhine set up the “Preston Barracks”, a vehicle depot and a repair shop. In 1991 the Maybacher Heide lay fallow again. Since 2001 the city of Recklinghausen has been converting the site into a residential area with its subsidiary "Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft RE mbH". It was put up for sale in 200 pieces. In 2007, the 40,000 square meter factory hall and the old boiler house were the last buildings to be demolished. A bunker still remained.
