Railway accident at Ufa

The railway accident at Ufa occurred on June 4, 1989 about 70 km east of the Soviet city ​​of Ufa . A gas explosion occurred near two trains on the Trans-Siberian Railway . At least 575 travelers died and over 600 were injured.

Happening

A near the railway line running LNG - pipeline sprung a leak. Pipeline personnel noticed a drop in pressure on the line but suspected a compressor failure rather than a leak. It switched on another compressor and increased the pressure at the leak. The leaked gas collected in a depression and exploded as the two trains passed. The pressure wave of the explosion is said to have burst windows in Ascha, 13 kilometers away . Most of the passengers on the trains were children on their way to or from vacation.

The Soviet leadership ordered a one-day state mourning for June 5, 1989. In 1992, an eight-meter-high memorial was erected on the site of the disaster, on which the names of 675 deceased are engraved. According to unofficial information, the number of victims was 780.
