Lamezia Terme railway accident
The Lamezia Terme railway accident was an accident near Lamezia Terme , Italy , on the Salerno – Reggio di Calabria railway , on November 21, 1980, in which three trains were involved. More than 28 people died.
Starting position
A freight train with 41 wagons drove south on the double-track line . It was followed in the same direction by the express train to Syracuse . Trains were also traveling in the opposite direction.
the accident
As it turned out afterwards, a brake test had not been carried out before the departure of the freight train . At Lamezia Terme there was a train separation . While the rear 28 freight cars came to a stop, the front part of the train continued without the driver noticing anything. The following express train drove into the abandoned freight cars and derailed . The locomotive and four cars crashed onto the track in the opposite direction. A train approaching there collided with the derailed vehicles.

More than 28 people died.
